In the gospel we read this weekend, St. Matthew envelopes us in in a solemn and mysterious environment. He prepares us for the message Jesus wants to give us on this occasion. The place? The shores of Lake Gennesareth. The multitudes surround the Master,
eager to hear His word. In order to be heard better, Jesus pulls off a short distance from the shore in a small boat that is close by. The parable He proposes is the one about the seed.

Just as the farmer sows the seed on the field, so the Divine Sower scatters His teachings in the field of our mind and heart. When we accept His word with holy enthusiasm to make the most of it and apply it to our everyday life, then “blessed are we”, because we are giving witness to how fruitful the word of God is.
